As I’m writing this, it’s June 11, 2023. I’ve been checking each day over the last week to see if a T-SQL Tuesday topic would come out for this month and haven’t seen one yet. I don’t have any particular topics on my mind, so it’s time to do a T-SQL Tuesday throwback edition.
In case you weren’t aware, you can easily search old T-SQL Tuesday topics over at http://tsqltuesday.azurewebsites.net/. If you’re experiencing writer’s block or are a new blogger looking for topic ideas, I recommend searching through the archives. If you’re looking for some interesting reading, it’s great for that, too. There is plenty of material to keep you busy.
I’m following my own advice for this week and picking a previous topic for a very short T-SQL Tuesday post. I wasn’t sure how I was going to narrow down an invite post to write on. Since the Tuesday coming up is 6/13, I figured I’d check out the TSQL Tuesday post from 6/2013. Close enough.
Back in the Day
The invitation back then came from Rob Farley, asking to write about plan operators. As always with T-SQL Tuesday, click the logo to read the full invitation.
Next, I’m going to point you to another site at https://sqlserverfast.com/epr/operator-list/. There you can find operator descriptions, the icons you can expect to see in different tools when viewing an execution plan, and more.
Let’s look at Index Spool as an example. I can scroll down and review the icons and a brief description:

If I want more, I can click the Index Spool link and read through more detailed information like execution modes and the algorithm.
It’s a good bookmark to have for a quick glance when you need it or you can click into each operator for a deeper dive.
New Invitation
A new T-SQL Tuesday invitation for June 2023 is posted so I’ll have a post for that next week.
Thanks for reading!
