Here Comes the Sun

The weather forecast is beginning to show warmer weather once again. No more waking up to an ice-covered world outside. No more concerns about pipes freezing. No more taking the dog out first thing in the morning, hoping neither of you slip and fall on an icy deck.

This post isn’t database-related, but I felt compelled to send out a brief reminder to those of us who spend too much time sitting in front of a computer screen: with winter almost in the rearview mirror, we all need to take advantage of the nicer weather.

Reasons to Get Outside

Getting some sunlight will boost your vitamin D, which will help boost your immune system. Thankfully, we’re getting towards the end of flu season. But there are plenty of other colds still being passed around that sunlight will help fend off.

Sunlight also helps regulate your sleep cycle. Considering the recent daylight savings time change, I know I need all the help I can get to find some normalcy with sleep. With better sleep comes better mood and energy, so take advantage of the warm, sunny days as they come.

Even if it’s not the sunniest day, just walking outdoors can help clear your mind and reduce stress. If you’re stuck trying to think through a problem, instead of stewing in front of your computer, go for a walk. Many great minds, like Albert Einstein and Steve Jobs, went on walks when they needed to think through problems. It worked for them and can work for you.

Or, go for a walk and don’t think about work at all. Use the walk to wring out your brain so you can come back refreshed.

Seize the Sunny Days

The next time you have a few minutes between meetings or just need a break during the day, put a short block on your calendar so you can get some steps and sun!
