Stop Doomscrolling

The news is stressful. These days, that’s mostly by design. It’s full of subjects like tragedies, wars, and scandals. For the sake of mental health, I’d like to recommend against doomscrolling all day and instead go back to a time when there wasn’t such a thing as a 24/7 news cycle.

For almost all news, knowing the instant something happens isn’t going to add significant value to your life. More often than not it’s only going to add more anxiety. People got along just fine when there was no internet, television, or radio to send out a constant barrage of updates. There was just a daily newspaper. It was good enough then and can still be good enough now.

Today, newspapers are harder to come by. Instead of tracking down a newspaper, sign up for a site or service you trust that will send a condensed daily e-mail with the latest news. I prefer reading Morning Brew each morning as it covers a wide range of topics. There’s also an IT Brew that focuses on IT news and security.

I’m not perfect. I still have occasions where I find myself doomscrolling for the latest updates when I could be doing something productive. But I’m trying to do it less and hope you will, too.

Thanks for reading!
