SQL Server Management Studio 21 is GA

In case you missed it, SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) 21 GA released last week. It can be downloaded here, and release notes can be found here.

I gave my first impressions to the SSMS 21 preview way back in November and may need to do a comparison post now that it’s officially released.

If you’re an SSIS user, don’t uninstall your old SSMS version yet. Along with the SSMS 21 GA release announcement, it was noted that there is a lack of support for SSIS and Maintenance Plans:

In the spirit of full transparency, during the final weeks of testing, we recognized that SSIS needed additional time to ensure the quality and stability our users expect, so we made the decision to temporarily hold it back while we continue to enhance the experience.

and

For now, if you rely on SSIS we recommend using SSMS 20, which you can install side-by-side with SSMS 21 GA.

Kind of a bummer, but at least it was announced up front instead of including SSIS with known issues. Hopefully, it’ll get there eventually.
